Several players on the Indian cricket team have been at the center of intense scrutiny following their loss to Australia, which marked the end of a decade-long dominance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Among the main objectives of the criticism is Shubman Gillwhose persistent struggles with the bat emerged as one of the series’ defining low points. As pressure mounts to make significant changes within the Indian team, the continued selection of Gill has become a contentious issue. Adding fuel to the fire, the former Indian batsman S. Badrinath has intensified the debate, leveling sharp and direct criticism at Gill’s performances, taking the discourse to a whole new level.
S. Badrinath furious with Shubman Gill’s performance in BGT 2024-25
The young top-order Indian batsman had a silent journey to Australia with the bat. The team expected Gill to show temperament and disrupt the wicket-taking rhythm of the Australian bowlers. On the contrary, Gill turned a wicket for the Australians, adding even more pressure on the middle-order batsmen. As a result, the entire Indian batting unit suffered throughout the series.
Badrinath, while talking to tamil star sportspointed out several major problems in Gill’s batting and made a sensational comment about the youngster, pointing out that talent may not be the only reason for Gill’s persistent selection in the team.
“If it was Shubman Gill from Tamil Nadu, he would have been ruled out.” commented the former Indian cricketer. Badrinath also highlighted Gill’s poor performances in Australia and the youngster’s lack of intention. Badrinath, who has appeared for the Indian team in seven ODIs, two Tests and one T20I, also highlighted that he wanted Gill to tire the bowlers and age the ball even if no runs were coming. But none of that happened throughout the series.
“You shouldn’t go there and say, oh, this is how I play. I will stand up and deliver. Whatever you can do, at that moment, try to do it. In this series, I didn’t get it from Shubman. Even in the countryside he was poor. I couldn’t stay on the slip and dot. What does he contribute to the team?” -Badrinath asked.
The 25-year-old is expected to be part of the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 but his consecutive failure to score big runs has made his selection difficult.

A series to forget for Gill
Gill had a terrible Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The young top-order batsman scored 93 runs in 5 innings throughout the series with the highest score of 31 runs in Adelaide. Gill’s batting nightmare is evident from the fact that the Australian pacer Mitchell Starc and Beau Webster who played only one Test match in Sydney scored more runs in the series than Gill.
Gill’s horror show is not just limited to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. His performance in the longest format of the game has been a constant concern. Gill’s performance during the home series against New Zealand It hasn’t been up to par. Apart from a 90-run knock at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, Gill could only score meager runs against the Blackcaps.
