Luis Suárez helps prevent suicide attempt in Uruguay

Inter Miami forward Luis Suárez made front-page news in Uruguay this weekend after being involved in an attempted rescue of a man who was threatening to take his life. Suárez and his wife were on vacation in Solymar and helped the emergency services.

According to Doble Amarilla, the man in question, 49 years old, also named Luis, climbed six meters up a tree late on Friday night and refused to come down. He threatened to jump unless his wife appeared on the scene. Emergency services spent many hours trying to calm them down, after a first attempt (the man had a rope tied around his neck) failed.

Suárez and Sofi Balbi were out for a walk in the area on Saturday, and ended up going to the scene, with Suárez having a brief talk with the man, in an attempt to help him in the fight for his life. Local police and a charity called Social Psychology Studies ended up taking Luis, 49, down at around 5pm local time on Saturday, almost 18 hours after emergency services first arrived to help.

The 37-year-old Atlético de Madrid and Barcelona icon finished last season with 21 goals and 9 assists in 30 games with Inter Miami, where he has a contract for one more year after retiring from the Uruguayan national team.
