All is not well in the Indian dressing room as the rift between the Indian team coach Gautama Gambhir and some of the team’s senior players have resurfaced after India’s defeat in the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) after which the visiting team is now losing 2-1 in the current match. Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
Gautam Gambhir criticized Indian players after losing in MCG Test
Differences in the Indian dressing room have reportedly existed for some time now. But it seems the defeat in the Boxing Day Test was too much for Gambhir. A report by Indian Express suggests that the Indian coach lashed out in the locker room and told the players. “Bahut ho gaya (I’ve had enough),” The report noted that Gambhir’s anger was towards players who chose to play their natural game instead of adapting to the team’s situation.
During the fourth Test of the series, several players knocked down their wickets due to their irresponsible shot selection. Among the notable layoffs in this sense is that of RISHABH PANTSwho gave away his wicket while playing rash shots in both Indian innings, Virat Kohli who was similarly fired throughout the series and Yashasvi Jaiswal who was sent back to the pavilion after a controversial third umpire at a time when the team desperately needed his presence to save the match on the final day of the Test.
The report further suggests that Gambhir told the Indian dressing room that until now he had given the players freedom to play as they wanted, but now he will decide the team’s strategy for each match and the players who will play. If you did not comply with the predetermined strategy you would be given a thank you, implying that failure to comply will result in your exclusion from the team.

Gambir wanted Cheteshwar Pujara for Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25?
Cheteshwar Pujara has been a pillar of strength for Indian cricket, especially in Tests. His record overseas, particularly in Australia, has been notable so far. To keep the balance in the team intact, the report further suggested that Gambhir wanted to include the top-order batsman in the team for its ongoing tour to Australia, but the Indian selectors rejected the prospects of Pujara joining the team. Furthermore, Gambhir continued to talk about Pujara even after India’s victory in the first Test match in Perth.
Pujara has an impeccable record in Test cricket as he played 103 Test matches for the country and scored 7,195 runs at an average of 43.60. His record against Australia is even more impressive with 2,074 runs in 25 matches against the Australians, including two memorable double hundreds and five centuries against their arch-rivals.
