La Liga’s surprise striker beats Vinicius, Robert Lewandowski and Jude Bellingham in 2024 without penalties

While Artem Dovbyk won the Pichichi award last season, he narrowly edged out Alexander Sorloth as top scorer. Both were courted by Atlético Madrid in the summer, but it was Sorloth who ended up making the move.

Sorloth has failed to earn a starting spot since arriving at Atlético, but he is proving his worth, as he showed on Saturday. According to Marca, in a calendar year in the league, Sorloth is Spain’s top scorer without taking penalties into account.

In 2024, Sorloth scored 31 goals, ahead of Robert Lewandowski (29), Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior (20). Against Budimir, from Osasuna, he also scored 20 goals. Sorloth cost Villarreal €32m this summer and has only started nine times in La Liga and the Champions League.

Despite his lack of starts, Sorloth remains sixth in the Pichichi race this season, with 8 goals to his name. Lewandowski leads the list with 16, followed by Raphinha (11), Ante Budimir (10) and Kylian Mbappé (10).
