Mohammed Siraj’s disappointing numbers
Siraj has been one of India’s key fast bowlers on this tour, but his recent outings have been less than satisfactory. In the Melbourne Test, he conceded 122 runs at an economy rate of 5.30 in just 23 overs, highlighting the lack of control and effectiveness with the new ball. The former captain highlighted the importance of direct communication with the players. Suggesting that Siraj should be told exactly why he is being fired, Gavaskar advocated a culture of transparency which he believes is vital for growth and improvement. He was not advocating for Siraj to be rested in the traditional sense, but rather to leave him out on merit.
“I think Siraj, maybe, needs a little break. In the sense that, I’m not talking about a break, we have to tell him that he is out of the team for non-compliance. There has to be a situation where you can’t beat around the bush. You have to be brutally direct and say ‘look, your performance hasn’t been up to par and therefore they’re going to write you off’. When you start talking about “rest”, players make mistakes. “They feel like they don’t need to improve their game.” Gavaskar told Star Sports.
“But I think Siraj needs to be told ‘look, you’re not bowling as well as we expected on pitches that have been useful’. That’s something that has to be said. If you want to make two changes. Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana to support Jasprit Bumrah. “Of course, do that.” he added.
